Listing Your Website in Directories

Web directories are sometimes hard to distinguish from search engines. For example, Yahoo! is a directory, and Google is a search engine. The main difference between the two is that a directory is edited by a person.
There are general, or global directories, and there are niche directories. You will want to submit your site to both. Why submit to directories? The obvious reason is because people who use the directory will be able to find your website, but also a link in a directory is a backlink to your site, and has additional value as any other backlink does.
Some directories are free; some free ones offer faster listing for a price; and some directories charge what may be more than the beginning webmaster can afford to pay.
